LOW PROFILE and Laura Hopes are working in collaboration on a new project celebrating Plymouth’s deep connection to the sea.
For centuries, tattoos have linked land-dwellers with the sea. Maritime and nautical tattoos have carried layers of meaning and significance for those whose skin they adorn, and others who see them.
During the next 6 months (Sept 2025 - Feb 2026) we are inviting people with a connection to Plymouth to share photos of their maritime, nautical and sea related tattoos and the stories behind them; holding free creative workshops to design new tattoos; and asking some artist friends to make new temporary tattoos for a special souvenir edition!
In February, we will host a celebration event at GROW Plymouth, to share all of the outcomes from the project including new digital research built from the tattoos created and shared during the project.
